The Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 regulates the way in which organisations handle personal data including the collecting, processing, disclosing and destroying of such data. The Act sets out 8 methods of good information handling commonly referred to as the Data Protection Principles. These principles prescribe that personal data will be
- handled fairly and lawfully
- obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes and shall not be processed in any manner which is incompatible with those purposes
- adequate, relevant and not excessive
- accurate and up to date
- not kept for longer than necessary
- processed in accordance with the rights of the Data Subject
- surrounded by appropriate security
- not transferred outside the European Economic Area

Under Section 7 of the DP Act you can request access to your personal data held by the University. This is called a Subject Access Request. You can use the form below to assist in making a request.
We will require proof of identity to ensure that you are entitled to the information and we also require a £10 fee. Once each of these has been received we will process you application and get a full response to you within 40 calendar days
The Records and Information Manager, located in the University Registry, responds on the University's behalf to Data Protection requests, ensuring that the University complies with its statutory obligations in respect of disclosure of information.
